FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most - about the Foundation, applying for a grant, and giving.

About the Foundation

Is The Ties Foundation the same as The Ties Program?

No. The Ties Foundation is a separate, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, inspired by and built on the proof of concept from The Ties Program (a for-profit organization). Read the full story on our About page.

Does The Ties Foundation arrange or facilitate adoptions?

No. We do not facilitate, arrange, or promote adoptions, and we don’t advocate for or against adoption as a practice. We exclusively fund post-adoptive support for people who are already adopted.

For Applicants

Who is eligible for a grant?

You’re likely eligible if you’re an adult (18+) intercountry adoptee, or a loved one supporting an adoptee’s journey, and cost is a real barrier to your origin journey, healing, or growth. We’re U.S.-founded with a global mission - adoptees anywhere are welcome to apply, though early grants may move fastest where a U.S.-based payment is possible. Full details are on What We Do.

What can’t be funded?

We don’t fund anything related to facilitating or arranging an adoption, general travel unrelated to origin or heritage, costs already covered by insurance or another funder, organizational funding, or birthplace travel arranged through adoption agencies or government adoption bodies. Full list on What We Do.

When does the first grant cycle open?

Early 2027. Sign up on the Apply page to be notified the moment applications open.

Is my application confidential?

Yes. Applications are reviewed by people connected to the adoptee community and are never shared publicly without your separate, explicit consent.

How long does a decision take once the cycle opens?

We aim for a decision within a few weeks of a complete application. If your timing is urgent, say so in your application.

For Donors

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. The Ties Foundation is a Colorado 501(c)(3); donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

How is my gift used?

We direct the large majority of our spending to programs, meaning our grants and the direct work of delivering them, with a goal of at least 80% of our budget going to program services as we grow. See Give for what different gift amounts make possible.

Can I give in a way other than a one-time or monthly donation?

Yes - donor-advised funds, gifts of stock, employer matching, bequests, endowed gifts, and checks by mail are all welcome. See Give, or contact ian@thetiesfoundation.org to talk through a larger or more complex gift.

Where can I see your financials?

Visit our Transparency page. As a new foundation, our first full financial reports will be published after our first grant cycle.
